Zion's Camp RICK EVERETT Paperback. 96 Pages. / 1-56085-064-7 / Beehive-coifed women, men in fedorasremember Utah in the poodle-skirt 1950s, back when everyone looked like Donna Reed and Ozzie Nelson, and when camp meant taking the Ford to the mountains? Rick Everett celebrates post-war wholesomeness in ninety authentic photographs, with his own captions to accentuate the photos' funny qualities. For instance, he reproduces an ad from the Improvement Era magazine showing SLCPD chief Cleon Skousen pouring a fellow officer a cup of Postum. A thought bubble above the chief's head reads, "He never has a second cup at home." As another example, a group of women in pioneer garb try to conceal permed hairdos beneath lacy bonnets. (Remember, these are real photos.) One bareheaded woman "thinks": "Everyone in this damned Relief Society is having a bad hair day but me!" Everett admits to one "racy" scene that juxtaposes the land-speed race car "Blue Flame" with a dance professor doing splits in the desert. The caption reads, "Famous flames of the Salt Flats." Nostalgic and lighthearted, this book commemorates a time past--before gangs and corporate takeovers--when people "had it all"--Saltair, Betty Crocker, Dee Burger clowns, Walt Disney at the drive-in, miniature golf . . . Come to think of it, who could have asked for more?" Rick Everett is an interior designer |
