Virginia Sorensen: Pioneering Mormon Author

by Stephen Carter

This is the first and only biography of Virginia Sorensen (1912–91), winner of the 1957 Newbery Medal, the highest honor given for children’s literature. She was also a New York Times bestselling author—of Mormon novels.

How did a woman who grew up in rural Utah in the early 1900s become a globetrotting, award-winning author? Although she wrote her books four generations ago, Sorensen’s novels are more urgent today than ever. Her body of work is a treasure trove of insight, compassion, and storytelling waiting to be rediscovered. Her life story has never been told, until now.

To celebrate the release of this biography, we have discounted the cost of our two ebooks of Virginia Sorensen's classic titles, A Little Lower Than the Angels, and Where Nothing is Long Ago, which will be available for $2.99 each until the end of this month. Click on the two titles above and you will be taken to Amazon where you may purchase them.

Excerpt

"When Virginia encountered the complexities of Mormon history—even when she encountered the complexities of the wider world—they did not threaten her world view and identity. She had an apostate grandmother, a Christian Scientist mother, and a Jack-Mormon father, all of whom she loved and admired. She could approach these new complexities less as attacks on her soul and more as a new world to explore. Instead of following the lead of previous Mormon writers who defended Zion at all costs, or non-Mormon writers who worked to warn the world of the so-called Mormon menace, she became an ethnographic novelist of Mormonism, presenting a detailed view of the lives and struggles of her people as only an insider/outsider could."
